Rwanda to Invest $600 Million in Bugesera International Airport in 2025/26 Budget

In a major step toward boosting its aviation sector and infrastructure development, the Government of Rwanda is planning to allocate approximately $600 million (Rwf850 billion) in the 2025/26 fiscal year to accelerate construction of the Bugesera International Airport.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Yusuf Murangwa, on June 12, shortly after presenting the 2025/26 national budget proposal to Parliament. The airport funding is one of the largest allocations in the proposed budget and signifies Rwanda’s commitment to becoming a regional transportation and investment hub.

According to Minister Murangwa, this investment accounts for nearly 70% of the Rwf1.2 trillion increase in government expenditure compared to the current fiscal year. The funding will significantly push forward construction work on the airport, which is seen as a key driver of Rwanda’s economic growth, tourism expansion, and logistics development.

 Why Bugesera International Airport Matters

The Bugesera International Airport is a flagship infrastructure project aimed at easing congestion at Kigali International Airport and positioning Rwanda as a central gateway in East Africa. Once completed, it is expected to handle millions of passengers annually, provide high-standard cargo services, and boost connectivity for trade and travel across the continent.

By investing in strategic projects like Bugesera Airport, Rwanda is also enhancing its global appeal to foreign investors and supporting the creation of thousands of new jobs.

Rwanda’s Focus on Infrastructure and Development

The 2025/26 budget prioritizes infrastructure, innovation, and economic transformation. With the airport development receiving such a large share of the planned increase in public spending, the government is making a clear statement about its development priorities: long-term growth, connectivity, and international competitiveness.

Minister Murangwa highlighted that infrastructure investments like Bugesera will contribute to Rwanda's broader development agenda, positioning the country as a key player in regional logistics and tourism.
